The coast of Maremma

Clean waters, ample room for camping, the opportunity to enjoy many summer sports, and the freedom to choose between beaches and rockier, wilder areas makes the Maremma a popular vacation destination

Costa della Maremma

You can also visit the splendid Tuscan archipelago comprising the islands of Giglio and Elba, both of which are easily reached by ferry.

And there is the Argentario peninsula with its coves and mountain peaks facing the sea, beautiful beaches like Cala Violina, (5 km to south of Scarlino), and the beautiful pineta - the pine woods - that are found almost everywhere along the coast

Castiglione of Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia - Il porto Castiglione della Pescaia - Il porto

About 20 km from Grosseto to the northwest is Castiglione della Pescaia.

The land there rises at the mouth of the Bruna River. Lake Prile was once located along its upper border. Although this large marshy basin was reclaimed in the times of the Lorena, some parts still remain lower than sea level today.

The town of Castiglione della Pescaia evolved from a small fishing village into a pleasant tourist center with fine hotels.

Many excellent outdoor camping spots are available to the south at Marina di Grosseto in the Pineta del Tombolo and north to Follonica, with Rive del Sole and Le Rochette.

Above Castiglione's beautiful historic center is the 14th-century castle of the Aragonesi.

Punta Ala

About 8 km north of Castiglione della Pescaia toward Follonica is the turn-off for Punta Ala.

Punta Ala is chiefly a tourist center with luxury hotels and campgrounds, with many villas hidden in the pineta and in the "macchia mediterranea".

The small tourist harbor mirrors the exclusivity of Punta Ala.

Il mar Tirreno di fronte a Punta Ala

For visitors at Punta Ala, the sea is very beautiful and sheltered from the afternoon winds.

Alberese

There are no hotels in Alberese and there is no camping in the park, but there are campgrounds just outside of the park boundaries.

A limited number of cars that may enter the park daily.

The hours during which the park is accessible to visitors is also limited.

Parco Naturale della Maremma

Environmental rules of all kinds apply to the beaches and areas inside the Parco Naturale della Maremma.

To the north, there are mouth of the Ombrone River, Principina al Mare, Marina di Grosseto, and Castiglione of the Pescaia.

To the north there are Principina al Mare, Marina di Grosseto and Castiglione of the Pescaia

To the south, there are Cala di Forno and Talamone.

In the background, you can see the promontory of the Argentario with Porto Santo Stefano.

Argentario

The clean and transparent sea and so much natural beauty is worth a long walk along the beach.
