The Cathedral of Montepulciano

The cathedral, projected by Ippolito Scalza, was built above the ancient church of Saint Maria.

To his inside there are many "treasures" that (they alone) deserve the visit to Montepulciano.

To the entry there is the bas-relief with "the Virgo that blesses the Aragazzi family."

Together to the statues of Bartholomew Aragazzi and Francis Piendibeni, the bas-relief was a part of an ample marmoreal complex , decomposed and lost in the Six hundred (two statues are the Victoria Albert museum of London).

In the left aisle there is the baptismal font of Tino da Camaino and the altar of Andrea della Robbia.

The baptismal font belonged to the ancient Pieve of Maria Saint (in this font the Poliziano poet came baptized), while the altar belonged to convent of Fontecastello.

More ahead there is, set in a small tabernacle in the fourth pillar, the Madonna with Child of Sano di Pietro.

Then we find the miraculous Madonna of St. Martino.

The history of the Madonna of St. Martino is full of miracles.

In the 1587 the cruel Vicenzo del Mincio struck the Madonna of St. Martino with a heavy maul that, instead of destroy She, the made livid on the front.

Above the altar there is beautiful painted of the Assumption (1401) by Taddeo di Bartolo.

The picture is biggest painting on table known of all the "senese" school.
